The Sookie Sookie set from Deborah Lippmann, initially an HSN exclusive, is now available for purchase from Deborah Lippmann's website. I try, often, to buy manufacturer direct. I find that in general the service is better and sometimes they slip you freebies. I'm all for freebies. Incidentally, those nail files you sometimes get from LippmannCollection.com are great. Not only are they made from recycled materials, but they are a nice fine grit and a good size. I've yet to wear one out. You usually get some postcard kind of adverts and sometimes a few of her individually wrapped polish remover pads, which are fantastic to slip in your purse or for a drawer at work. If you get a chip and you can't leave it alone these are great. Remove all your polish and while you have to nekkid all day, at least it's not chipped polish, which I think is infinitely worse.
What was I talking about? Oh yes. Sookie Sookie. If you watch True Blood at all, you know (SPOILER ALERT!) that Sookie Stackhouse is part fairy and part human. This gives her some special powers. If not for that, while bright and pretty enough, she wouldn't probably be remarkable at all. I think this set is supposed to be representing those two sides of her, though I tend to appreciate the smartassedness of Full Metal Jacket's peace sign on a helmet also painted with "Born to Kill" on it reflecting the duality of man more...but that's probably just me.
What we have here is a box set of thankfully full size polishes, because, as you may know, minis kind of piss me off. They're hard to handle, you rarely get them for half price even though they're half size and I always feel like I have to preserve them because they are so small. The box is not normal Lippmann classy standard, but it's fine.
Ridiculous amount of glare, I know. It's to show the box and it's embossed finish, like the other set, not so much the polish.
No flash so you can see the polishes and how they sit in there.
And the polishes removed from the box. You can see we have a tab open sort of arrangement, which isn't as nice or durable as the normal heavy Lippmann box, but once again, this was an HSN release initially so it may have been because of that. Aside from just feeling like you have something of high quality, there is no worry here. The polishes aren't going to get broken and it stores them safely. I guess it's just that when you dish out $16 for a nail polish a really nice box is a nice touch.
First up, Human Nature, which is a mannequin-y creamy beige. I don't have any complaints except to say that to me this is about the most blah color one could possibly imagine. I don't personally like it. The formula is good, this is two coats which gives full opacity. It's just about as boring as plain white toast. **waves hand as if to shoo it away** This would probably be a great base for more sheer polishes because it sure isn't going to detract from them. I haven't read the other blogs on this set, I don't know if the other bloggers are loving this...I personally do not. It's a great nude for work, I suppose. I wouldn't wear it to an interview. It's dull to the point of distraction.
And it gives me lobster paws.
Here's a label shot just for scuzz. I take them so I know later what everything is called without having to unpack my carefully engineered storage for these box sets. (I need something better. Maybe a shelf.)
blah. Looks like wet quikrete. You know that instant concrete stuff? Maybe it's the amount of grey in this that I don't like. Ah well, they can't all be winners.
It's partner, however...worth the price of admission:
Fairydust. This stuff MUST be magical because it's like transforming Cinderella into the princess. Look at that. It's amazing. Often these kinds of lacquers...I don't know what it is, but they put green in them. Which...ew. It just doesn't work. This though, is pink and rosy and ooooo. It lights up. It transforms Human Nature into something worth looking at. (Yes, this is Fairydust over Human Nature, just in case that wasn't clear.)
Here's a shot of the bottle. It looks like Christmas snow. You know the snow that looks like it has a coating of diamond dust on in?
It's so pretty that I'd be afraid to wear it to drive. I'd probably wreck. I didn't get to see this in sunlight, but I can only imagine that it lights up even more. It already practically glows.
This is with flash. it doesn't even look like Human Nature under there any more, which redeems it somewhat.
Last one, in somewhat more normal lighting. I really wanted you to see this because these won't be around forever. They are limited editions and I imagine they are the leftovers from the HSN sale. Maybe not, but regardless, these are advertised as limited. The other collection isn't anything special, I don't really think? But this one is. Human Nature is...psht, whatever, but this is worth getting the set. Even this look is worth getting the set.
Suppose she never intended Human Nature to be worn alone? I'm not sure I can account for it otherwise.
Getting the idea I don't like it? I apologize. When I don't like something I suppose I'm as passionate about it as I am when I do love something.
Picking these up? What do you think? They are not available individually, a habit Illamasqua seems to be picking up. Which irritates me. Now I've got a polish I'll never wear in my collection. No, it's not the first, but I would appreciate not being saddled with one I don't want to get one I do.
**steps off soapbox**
I know. I'll shut up now.
I hope you like these, or at least one.
Happy Talons!!
